Imagine a piece of art as singular and extraordinary as your soul dog.
A photograph made to express their joy and spirit.
Then hand printed and crafted to embody the wildness and wonder they bring to your life.
A piece of art inspired by them, and made for you.

I’ve been a dog photographer for a long time, and after years of helping clients honor the dogs they love, I’ve found myself captivated by a new way to express the spirit and joy of dogs.
A process of creating a piece of art that still honors the dogs of our lives, but where a photograph is just the beginning of the story we tell.
These hand-printed cyanotype pieces came to life out of a longing to make something that could feel as wild and alive as the joy our dogs bring to the world. And that could help us to reconnect with the wonder they’ve inspired in our lives.
Working with cyanotypes is an intentional, intimate, and deeply creative process. Because this art requires more time and focus, I feel a deeper connection to the stories of the dogs in each piece than ever before.
I’ve rediscovered my wonder through making this art, and I’d love to share it with you by making a piece inspired by your soul dog.
Commission your one-of-a-kind cyanotype piece so that you can experience the wonder of art that honors your once-in-a-lifetime soul dog.

Commission your one-of-a-kind cyanotype piece so that you can experience the wonder of art that honors your once-in-a-lifetime soul dog.

The remarkable thing about these cyanotype pieces is that each one is truly one of a kind. Every print is developed on paper that has been hand painted with emulsion, so no matter how many times one image is printed, you will never have an exact copy.
Not every image works well for cyanotype printing, and not every piece I have available works for every image. Because of the wild nature of these pieces, I need the freedom to experiment. Which is why I ask you to trust me to choose the best images to honor your soul dog and make a piece of art you will love.
After your photo session, I’ll curate the images I believe to be the best candidates for your cyanotype commission. There will be an opportunity for you to see the candidates before I move onto creating negatives, and provide your input about which one(s) you are most excited about.
When we meet at your consultation (on Zoom), we’ll chat about your dog and the kind of art we can make together. And then, when you’re ready to book your commission, we’ll pick a date and location for your photo session.
During your photo session, we’ll hang out, explore the area we’re in, and let your dog be their wild and wonderful self. We’ll take some lightly posed photos of your dog in nature (and you with your dog if you like, too), but mostly we’ll just let things unfold naturally.
We go at your dog’s pace, so there’s no strict limit to the time we spend together. Some of my favorite moments with clients are when we’re just hanging out as the sun goes down, laughing in awe at the beauty we get to experience with the dogs we love.

After we’ve selected the images for your commission, I’ll begin the process of creating your MoonDog Artwork, and completing any finishing touches on your collection of 10 digital photos.
Once your cyanotype prints are finalized, and your commission is paid in full, I bring them to my local frameshop where they will be matted and framed.
Once your finished framed piece is ready, we’ll arrange to get it to you.

The MoonDog Collection came to life after a moonlight swim in a lake near my home. Floating there as the light from the moon glittered across the surface of the water, I felt wild with joy. Every worry and longing ceased pulling at my heart as I let the water wash over me. All I knew in those moments was what it feels like to be present in the joy of being alive.
This feeling reminded me of dogs, and how they teach us to pay attention to what matters. And show us how to live in the moment, find our joy, and share it with those we love.
MoonDog is for all whose dogs have helped them return to their untamed joy, even if only for a little while.
There are two different styles of MoonDog pieces: MoonDog Prints and MoonDog Triptychs.
MoonDog Prints are a single image hand printed in the MoonDog shape. They are matted, framed, and ready to hang on your wall.
Included in packages starting at $2500
MoonDog Triptychs include three images from your session (images that will work best are first selected by the artist, and then you’ll have a chance to discuss which combination you’d like for your triptych) that tell a story of your dog. The images are hand printed in the MoonDog shape, then matted and framed together as one piece.
Included in packages starting at $3000

Each package includes a photo session, a MoonDog Artwork, and a collection of 10 beautifully edited digital photographs.
If you’re not sure which MoonDog piece you want yet, that’s okay. We can explore the possibilities together.
If you are a past client wanting to commission a MoonDog piece from a previous session, a la carte pricing is available.

If your session takes place outside the local Skagit Valley or North Whidbey Island areas, we will discuss additional session fee costs at your consultation.
This will definitely depend on a number of factors (your budget, wall space, how many photos you want, etc).
You don’t have to decide at the time of filling out the commissions form, but if you are looking for a recommendation, I’m happy to let you know that as an artist who loves storytelling, my favorite piece to create is the MoonDog Triptych. It’s such a beautiful and wild way to express the spirit of your dog. And I have so much fun making it for you.
If you are a new client, we will book a session date to take photos of your dog (or cat or horse) for your cyanotype commission. Your session is included in your package, but there may be additional travel fees for sessions taking place outside of the Skagit Valley and North Whidbey Island areas.
For folks whose dogs, cats, or horses have been photographed by me in the past, we can create your artwork using photos from your past session whether you were a client or your animal companion modeled for me.
Although cyanotypes are the final piece we create together, the photographs we take to make your cyanotype commission are also beautiful expressions of your soul dog. This is why a collection of 10 beautifully edited digital photos are included in your MoonDog Artwork Commission.
We’ll go over this in more detail during your Cyanotype Commission Consultation.

Not all photos work as cyanotypes, so the selection of which image(s) is best for your piece will be my responsibility.
The art you are commissioning is not only a one-of-a-kind piece. It is my interpretation of your dog’s joy, spirit, and story. For me to best serve this purpose, I need the flexibility to choose the images to work with.
Not every image works well for cyanotype printing, and not every piece I have available works for every image. Because of the wild nature of these pieces, I need the freedom to experiment. These timing estimates may change as I get in the flow of making these art pieces for clients. To start, this is what I’m comfortable committing to. My goal is to be able to give you a more straightforward estimate after beginning your project, and to have clear communication with you throughout the process so that you are aware of any changes in timing.
For framed and multi-image pieces, you can expect it to be finished at least 6 to 10 weeks* from when your project is started**.
*Creating cyanotypes is a multi-step process that involves experimentation. Because of this, some pieces may take longer than others, especially if you have commissioned a multi-image framed piece. Other factors that determine how long your project will take are: how many commissions are in the works/ahead of your project, my framer’s schedule, your payment schedule, and any equipment/supplies repairs or fulfillment needs.
**Projects are officially started when I begin editing the negative I use for printing. All commissions must be paid in full before they are brought to my framer for finishing. Timeline estimates do not account for disruptions in payment schedule.
When you know you want to commission a cyanotype artwork or would like to meet to explore what’s possible, you can fill out the commissions form to begin.
If my books are currently full, please sign up to the waitlist, or you can email me directly at marika@souldogcreative.com if you have any questions.
A cyanotype (AKA blueprint) is a monochromatic print created through a process of exposing ultraviolet-reactive chemicals (iron salts + water) to UV light (the sun or a special lamp).
At this time, I do not create cyanotypes from photos I did not take.
Part of the magic of MoonDog artwork is how your dog’s spirit is expressed through the photographs we’ve created during your session.
But if I do ever experiment with offering to make cyanotypes with client-submitted photos, the best way to know about it will be by signing up to my email list, Notes from the wild.

Once an image for your piece has been selected, I create and print a negative to place onto watercolor paper that has been hand painted with the cyanotype emulsion. This paper is then placed under Ultraviolet light – either in the sun or using a special UV lamp. This step is repeated and experimented with until a final print is reached.
After the print has finished processing in the UV light, it is washed in a multi-step water bath. The unexposed cyanotype emulsion is rinsed away, revealing the final image. The print is then dried and pressed before it is prepped for framing. This step is repeated and experimented with until a final print is reached.
The final stage of making your art piece is getting it ready for display. If you have chosen to frame your piece on your own, then you will receive your art in matting. If you prefer a ready-to-hang piece, you will receive your art presented in a mat and frame handpicked by me.
